Jahn School England Trip March 31st-April 6th, 2012

             On Sunday April 1^st, the students arrived in London and visited Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and London Bridge. At dinner time, students received etiquette lessons at the Holiday Inn where many for the first time had Lamb Chops with mint jelly.

            On the morning of April 2^nd the students headed down the South Bank of the Thames River for a ride on the famous London Eye. They saw fantastic views of the city from this 443 foot tall Ferris wheel After the ride they took a walk along the South Bank to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. The students had a guided tour and lesson about Shakespeare’s career as a playwright in London. They learned how and why he became popular and how his legacy lives on today. In the afternoon they visited the Tower of London. This historic castle on the North Bank of the Thames River was founded in 1066. Throughout the centuries it has served as a castle, a prison, an armory, and the Royal Mint.

            After breakfast on April 3^rd, the students set off for the British Museum, which is home to the Rosetta stone, world class art and artifacts. The British Museum is considered one of the world’s greatest museums with some 8 million works in its permanent collection. It is widely considered the best museum in the world that documents human culture from its beginnings to present. After an amazing day at the British museum, some of the students spent time shopping the famous department store Harrods on Oxford Street. Others hopped on the underground for a very funky, eclectic and unique adventure in Camdon, a borough of London. Camdon is known for its alternative and ethnic cultures that are prominently represented in the open air stalled markets. The day finally came to an end after dinner at the world’s first Hardrock Café.

            The morning of April 4^th, the students said goodbye to London and set off for Oxford. This fascinating city established in the 9th Century has been home to many prestigious universities and colleges for the past 800 years. Students learned about the history of Oxford and its university as they walked through the heart of the historic city center. They also learned about the numerous famous authors that lived in Oxford including C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and Lewis Carroll, to name a few. Many of the students were very excited to see the “Harry Potter” sites which were models for the movie sets. After a break for lunch, the students visited Oxford Castle to learn about the history of the centuries old castle, including the fate of Eleanor of Castille, England’s first queen of consort of Edward 1.

            On April 5^th, the students arrived in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace and childhood home of William Shakespeare, where we visited and toured his home. After lunch in Stratford the students departed for the city of Bath. Bath is known for its ancient Roman ruins built upon natural hot springs that have supplied hot spring water to this area for thousands of years. The remains of the excavated bath houses, built thousands of years ago by the Romans were simply fascinating to see.

            The morning of April 6^th was a sad day for our students. Their minds ignited with curiosity and wonderment by all they had experienced, it was time to bid farewell to England.        

            For many of the students this is the first time that they have ventured very far from home. An experience like this can be life changing and as an educator, it is very satisfying and delightful to see the excitement in my student’s eyes having experienced something so grand.
